چکیده

We propose a new model for the initiation of a solar coronal mass ejection (CME). The model agrees with two properties of CMEs and eruptive Ñares that have proved to be very difficult to explain with previous models : (1) very low-lying magnetic Ðeld lines, down to the photospheric neutral line, can open toward inÐnity during an eruption ; and (2) the eruption is driven solely by magnetic free energy stored in a closed, sheared arcade. Consequently, the magnetic energy of the closed state is well above that of the posteruption open state. The key new feature of our model is that CMEs occur in multipolar topologies in which reconnection between a sheared arcade and neighboring Ñux systems triggers the eruption. In this ““ magnetic breakout ÏÏ model, reconnection removes the unsheared Ðeld above the low-lying, sheared core Ñux near the neutral line, thereby allowing this core Ñux to burst open. We present numerical simulations that demonstrate our model can account for the energy requirements for CMEs. We discuss the implication of the model for CME/Ñare prediction. Solar Mini-Dimming Kinematics and Their Positive Correlations with Coronal Mass Ejections and Prominence

Solar mini-dimmings can be detect in the Extreme Ultra-Violet coronal eruptions. Here, sequences of 171_A images taken by Solar Dynamic Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembaly on 13 June 2010 are used. In this special day, both of coronal mass ejection and prominence were observed. The average velocities and accelerations of 500 mini-dimmings which were detected using on feature based classif...

Anomalous-plasmoid-ejection-induced secondary magnetic reconnection: modeling solar flares and coronal mass ejections by laser–plasma experiments

The driving mechanism of solar flares and coronal mass ejections is a topic of ongoing debate, apart from the consensus that magnetic reconnection plays a key role during the impulsive process. While present solar research mostly depends on observations and theoretical models, laboratory experiments based on high-energy density facilities provide the third method for quantitatively comparing as...

The Role of Magnetic Reconnection in Solar Activity

We argue that magnetic reconnection plays the determining role in many of the various manifestations of solar activity. In particular, it is the trigger mechanism for the most energetic of solar events, coronal mass ejections and eruptive flares. We propose that in order to obtain explosive eruptions, magnetic reconnection in the corona must have an “on-off” nature, and show that reconnection i...

Initiation of Coronal Mass Ejections in a Global Evolution Model

Loss of equilibrium of magnetic flux ropes is a leading candidate for the origin of solar coronal mass ejections (CMEs). The aim of this paper is to explore to what extent this mechanism can account for the initiation of CMEs in the global context. A simplified MHD model for the global coronal magnetic field evolution in response to flux emergence and shearing by large-scale surface motions is ...

The Log-normal Distributions of Physical Quantities of Flare associated Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs), and Flare/CME Model of Gamma-ray Bursts

We investigated the statistical distributions of physical quantities of solar flares and associated coronal mass ejections (CMEs). We found that the distributions of the X-ray peak fluxes of CME-related flares, their time intervals, and speeds of associated CMEs are in good agreement with log-normal distributions. One possible interpretation of this is that only large energetic mass ejections c...

First Determination of the True Mass of Coronal Mass Ejections: A Novel Approach to Using the Two STEREO Viewpoints

The twin Sun Earth Connection Coronal and Heliospheric Investigation (SECCHI) COR2 coronagraphs of the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) provide images of the solar corona from two view points in the solar system. Since their launch in late 2006, the STEREO Ahead (A) and Behind (B) spacecrafts have been slowly separating from Earth at a rate of 22.5 degrees per year. By the end o...
